Jungle Cruise Themed Restaurant Rumored to be Coming to Magic Kingdom

Jungle Cruise - Crew Mess

There have been rumors reporting that the new restaurant would be a New Orleans-themed, a la Princess and the Frog…though recently we’ve heard the area just may actually be themed after the Jungle Cruise!

The restaurant would take place at the old Adventureland Veranda, which served as a restaurant for years – with Kikkoman as a corporate sponsor.

Recently the veranda has been used as a character Meet and Greet with Tinkerbell and her Fairy Friends. (Tink and Co. have since flitted over to the Main Street Theater, where you can catch them, along with Mickey and other characters, for aaaaaalllll of your photo op needs.) These days, you’ll frequently spy Peter Pan and Wendy here.

But now, it would seem that this new opening is definitely linked to the snack spot switch reported last week, when Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace swapped real estate (and treats).

But back to the restaurant. The backstory for the new spot may include a retreat for Jungle Cruise skippers, or even a secondary source of income for them!

Maybe will be similar to Be Our Guest Restaurant, in that it will offer r quick service and table service dinner.  We can hope….right?

If these rumors are true it is anticipated that the new restaurant could open as early as late 2015.

MagicBands to be Used in Place of Parking Permit for Resort Guests

Magic-Kingdom Parking Plaza

The traditional parking permits that have been issued for Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests for years are being discontinued.

Disney is beginning the roll-out today with guests staying at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort.  The parking permits will no longer be handed out at check-in, with guests now being asked to use their MagicBand for parking access.

At the theme parks, guests will present their MagicBand at the auto plaza booth to validate free parking permission. When returning to the resort hotel, guests can enter the dedicated guest lane and use the MagicBand for access through the barrier.

Those guests that do not have a MagicBand can use their RFID Key to the World cards instead.

The change to a paperless parking system is especially important following the recent introduction of the direct to room capability that allows guests to bypass traditional check in.

Following the initial introduction of the new system at Yacht and Beach Club, expect the roll out to continue to the other resorts over the next few months.

Epcot’s Innoventions West Probably Closing by Summer

Innoventions-west

Speculation is mounting that Epcot’s Innoventions West will be permanently closed by the summer.

Over the past few months there have been a number of exhibits closing, including  the Test the Limits Lab, and soon the IBM THINK exhibit. The remaining exhibits include The Great Piggy Bank Adventure, Where’s The Fire, the Videogame Playground and perhaps the most popular of what remains, the Disney VISA characters meet and greet.

There is no word on what could be replacing Innoventions West should it close, but the timeline suggests that as of this May. only the meet and greet will be potentially surviving.

Innoventions East, which has seen the bulk of recent new additions is not affected by the plans.

As always, this information should be treated as speculation until confirmed. Disney has not made any announcement about the future of the attraction.

Breakfast to Begin at Be Our Guest Restaurant March 20th

Be Our Guest

Disney has today announced that the breakfast service at Be Our Guest will begin on March 20th.

As with most offerings at Be Our Guest, it will once again be offered in a test capacity through to June 18th.

Be Our Guest Restaurant has been extremely popular since its opening.  As one of the main additions of New Fantasyland, Disney looks to be seeking to add capacity.

Unlike lunch, pre-ordering of menu items will not be available, and selections will be made inside the restaurant.

Reservations begin on March 17 using My Disney Experience for dates from March 20 through to June 18th.

Disney’s ‘Cinderella’ Debuts with $70.1 Million at Box Office

Walt Disney Records CINDERELLA

“Let It Go” may be Walt Disney’s anthem these days, but “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” might be the more accurate theme song for the Disney juggernaut.

Disney’s recent streak continued over the weekend with the $70.1 million North American debut of its traditional, sumptuously costumed fairy tale adaptation “Cinderella,” according to studio estimates Sunday. Interest in the film, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Lily James of “Downton Abbey”, was boosted by a “Frozen” short, “Frozen Fever,” that played before the feature.

Disney’s box-office surge has been propelled partly by the so-called “halo effect” of “Frozen,” a sequel to which Disney announced last week. But it’s also been driven by the appeal of seeing Disney cartoon classics turned into live-action fantasies. “Cinderella” follows previous live-action hits like “Maleficent” (whose May 2014 debut of $69.4 million “Cinderella” narrowly bested) and “Alice in Wonderland.”

The holiday release “Into the Woods,” from the Stephen Sondheim musical, added to the live-action trend, and many more are on the way. “The Jungle Book,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Dumbo” are all coming in live action, as is a sequel to “Alice in Wonderland.”

Disney has also found big profits in capitalizing on female moviegoers, who made up the largest chunk of “Frozen” and “Malificent” fans. The audience for “Cinderella” was 66 percent female, Disney said.

“There is seemingly a lot of appetite for these stories to be told, I think, in part because many of them have a female protagonist and we’ve seen there’s significant box-office success that can come by featuring female-driven stories,” said Dave Hollis, head of distribution at Disney.

“`Frozen Fever” was certainly part of why we’re seeing the kind of success that we did this weekend,” Hollis said. “In and of itself, `Cinderella’ is absolutely a great, stand-alone experience. But it ends up being a one-plus-one-equals-three thing for the consumer.”

The success of “Cinderella,” which cost about $95 million to make, was international. It made $62.4 million overseas, including $25 million in China. Disney could also celebrate “Big Hero 6” becoming the top-grossing worldwide animated release of 2014; the Oscar-winner has made $633 million globally.

With Disney’s high-priced but lucrative ownership of Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar, the studio will be flexing its strength throughout 2015 with releases like “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Inside Out” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

“Disney is just a well-oiled machine that is firing on all cylinders right now,” says Paul Dergarbedian, senior media analyst for box-office data firm Rentrak. “It’s about this Disney umbrella which encompasses these incredible crown jewel brands they have. `Cinderella’ is just the latest example.”

While Disney was flexing its might, the powers of another box-office force, Liam Neeson, were checked. Neeson’s latest thriller, “Run All Night,” a New York crime saga co-starring Ed Harris, opened with $11 million for Warner Bros.

The film’s poor performance marks the weakest debut for the “Taken” star as an action film lead. Dergarbedian noted Neeson’s appeal is strongest in PG-13 rated films (all three “Taken” films, “Non-Stop”), while weaker in R-rated releases like “Run All Night” and last year’s “A Walk Among the Tombstones.”

Last week’s top film, the sci-fi thriller “Chappie,” from “District 9” director Neil Blomkamp, slid to fifth with $5.8 million for Sony Pictures.

In limited release, the critically acclaimed independent horror film “It Follows” earned a robust $163,000 on just four screens.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Cinderella,” $70.1 million ($62.4 million international).

2. “Run All Night,” $11 million.

3. “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” $6.2 million.

4. “Focus,” $5.8 million.

5. “Chappie,” $5.8 million.

6. “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” $5.7 million.

7. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,” $4.1 million.

8. “McFarland, USA,” $3.7 million.

9. “American Sniper,” $2.9 million.

10. “The DUFF,” $2.9 million.

Bob Iger Rejects Idea of Third Anaheim Gate but Confirms Expansion

Mickey:Minnie - Disneyland

From the Los Angeles Times

A new Disney theme park in Anaheim is probably not in the works but an expansion of Disneyland is very likely.

Walt Disney Co. Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Iger dismissed rumors that the company may open a third theme park adjacent to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

But in the same breath, he said an expansion of Disneyland is in the works.

“We have plans at Disneyland for an expansion that we have not announced but those plans at the present do not include a third gate,” he told shareholders in San Francisco during the Burbank company’s annual meeting.

According to longtime park watchers, Disney has developed plans, dating to 2000, to build a third park on a 78-acre site just south of Disney’s complex on Harbor Boulevard.

But those plans, Disney experts say, were shelved while the company focused on the 2001 opening of Disney California Adventure, which fell short of predictions until a $1-billion expansion in 2012 added the hugely successful Cars Land.

A Disneyland expansion is likely to feature Marvel superheros or “Star Wars” characters.

After all, Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment Inc. in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012.

Disney may have already begun gauging public interest in a “Star Wars” expansion.

On Twitter, one Disney guest posted a screen grab in 2013 of a Disney survey that asked: “How interested would you be in visiting a Star Wars themed land at Disneyland Resort?”

Other survey questions included: “Which Star Wars characters would you definitely not want to see or meet in person?”

Also, Disneyland’s recent announcement to close the Innoventions exhibit hall in Tomorrowland prompted fans to suggest that a new Marvel or “Star Wars” attraction is in the works for that building.
