My Disney Experience Update Brings New Features

Disney has released a new version of My Disney Experience that brings a very useful features to app.

For Annual Passholders, it will now be possible to renew a pass directly from the My Disney Experience app.

For guests staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotels, you can now view room charges and Disney Dining Plan entitlements/usage directly in the app. This will make it easier to keep track of the remaining Dining Plan meals and snacks throughout your trip.

For the iOS version, the update will also add compatibility for the upcoming update to iOS11.

The updates for iOS and Android are available in the App Store and Google Play.

Disney Launches Disney Mix Messaging App Aimed at Kids and Families

Disney is wading into the mobile messaging market with a new chat application called Disney Mix, aimed at kids, tweens and families. While the app will compete to some extent with popular messaging clients like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and others, the goal with Disney Mix is to provide a safer alternative that’s built with the needs of kids in mind. That means the app isn’t just about chatting — it’s also about playing games, making memes, sharing stickers and more, says Disney.

The company notes that it already has over a decade of experience when it comes to building online communities for children, including things like Club Penguin, MarvelKids and other virtual worlds.

To create Disney Mix, it used the learnings from Club Penguin as a starting point, then built out new tools, moderation capabilities and educational resources that are specific to Disney Mix.

Of course, given its target demographic, Disney Mix adheres to the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which restricts how companies operating services directed to children are allowed to collect and use personal information.

When users sign up for the app, they agree to a series of community rules, including “stay safe,” respect others” and “keep it clean.” The first refers to the fact that you don’t give out personal information to people you don’t know, while the others speak to the type of content that can be shared. That is, there’s to be no bullying and no foul language.

There are moderation capabilities in the app as well, that will see members either temporarily and permanently banned from Disney Mix for breaking any of the rules, says Disney.

This is handled by a moderation team that can also be summoned at any time by clicking the “Whistle” icon in the top of the chat thread. This reports the conversation to the mod team to handle. Plus, Disney Mix users can remove people from their friends list by swiping left on their name.

The company is also encouraging parents to sit down with kids to discuss the rules of the app, before signing up their under 13-year-old kids to participate.

While the app is rated as “4+” on the App Store, the concept will likely appeal the most to slightly older kids, up to pre-teens.

In Disney Mix, friends can chat with each other, which includes sending stickers of favorite Disney characters, like Flash from Zootopia, Hank from Finding Dory and Jenny from Adventures in Babysitting, for example. Additional content in the app comes from Frozen, Monsters University, Toy Story, K.C. Undercover, Descendants and other Disney franchises.

Beyond chatting with friends and family, kids can also add Disney accounts to their friends list, like Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Movies. These accounts will then message them with new photos and videos periodically, along with other news.

Perhaps the biggest differentiator between Disney Mix and a straightforward messaging client is that it has a variety of interactive games built-in, like Spikes, Elsa’s Winter Waltz and Cards of Doom. Friends can play these games with each other inside their chat screen.

When getting started, users set up a personalized avatar that they customize by selecting the hair style, facial features, accessories and more. It’s not all that different from Nintendo’s Miitomo, except for the fact that their avatar is just the face, not a whole body.

Disney says that an upcoming release of the app will introduce support for more features, including photo and video sharing — again, with parental involvement kept in mind, the company claims.

Disney Mix is a free download on iOS and Android.

Disney and Hipster Whale Team Up for Crossy-Over

Crossy Road, launched by Australian developer Hipster Whale in November of 2014, was a runaway hit, garnering 50 million downloads in its first 90 days. Now Disney is getting in on the Frogger-inspired action.

Disney Games announced the collaboration on social media, with a teaser video showing a voxelised Mickey Mouse trying to dodge traffic.

“Move over Chicken, there are new road crossers in town! From Hipster Whale and Disney comes Disney Crossy Road — an all-new take on the 8-bit endless adventure to cross the road without splatting,” the video description reads.

The collaboration seems a strange one for Disney conceptually, as the game is predicated on characters being smooshed by cars. It seems a natural one for Hipster Whale, who breathed fresh life into Namco’s Pac-Man with Pac-Man 256.

According to Matt Hall, the game has been in development for around a year. Considering that Crossy Road only took 12 weeks to develop, he said, it felt unusual, but he was confident that the time was well spent.

“We never expected Crossy Road to get as big as it did, so we had to sort of fix it as we went,” he said. “We used this as an opportunity to fix everything that was wrong with Crossy Road. It’s going to be a better game.”

Only Mickey is shown in the trailer, so we don’t know how far into the world of Disney the new game will delve (as far as Star Wars? Princesses? Duck Tales?). However, there will be at least 100 Disney and Pixar characters, and nine Disney- and Pixar-themed environments with their own soundtracks, in addition to the standard Crossy Road world. Hall also confirmed that each of these worlds will have its own rules, and not all of them will involve the game’s ubiquitous cars and logs.

A launch date has also not yet been given, with the trailer only mentioning that the game is coming “soon.” However, interested players can follow the game’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for updates. If you already have Crossy Road, you can also now download an update with a free Mickey Mouse outfit for the chicken, inspired, Hall said, by the Mickey Mouses hidden around Disneyland.

The game will be released on iOS, Android, Windows Phone and the Amazon Appstore.

Disney Releases New ‘Frozen’ App That Lets Users Build Their World Inside A Snow Globe

Disney announced on Thursday the release of a new Frozen-themed game aimed at children that allows users to enter and create their own versions of the world seen in the popular animated movie.

Titled Disney Build It: Frozen, the player constructs and customizes various buildings inside a snow globe, letting their imagination run wild.

The app starts off with a brief tutorial to show the player how to drag and drop the various Frozen buildings, starting with Elsa’s Castle. The player adds their favorite colors to the buildings and customizes them with different roofs and chimneys, then watches them appear before their eyes.

Along with Elsa’s Castle, the player can construct other buildings, including Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post, Arendelle Towers and much more. The user is able to visit locations as seen in the movie, like the North Mountain, the Forest, Troll Valley, Arendelle Castle and the town of Arendelle.

Building certain structures will cause some of the movie’s popular characters (Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Sven and Kristoff) to join the environment. These characters appear with an adorable snow globe that will warm the player’s heart as they explore their icy world. These characters can wander around the snow globe, dance, play and celebrate with the player, but the user can slide them to whatever location they please.

Once a building is created, the user earns snowflakes for props to add to the landscape of their globe, such as a snowman or snow-covered trees.

The gamer can also unlock a new character called Snowgie, a small snowman creature that will accompany the player on mini-missions.

Once the player finishes building their world, they can use Apple’s 3D Touch feature to activate a flythrough mode to be able to see the entirety of their snow globe creation. Players can build multiple snow globes and use the Home Screen Quick Actions to instantly jump into them.

With its lovable characters, easy gameplay and magical soundtrack, this new game will surely captivate Frozen fans for hours on end.

Disney Build It: Frozen is now available to download for iOS and Android for $3.99 with in-app purchases.
