Disney Infinity Releases Timetable for Shutdown

According to an email sent to all Toy Box builders today, Disney Infinity’s servers will be shutdown on March 3, 2017.

Since announcing the discontinuation of production on Disney Infinity, the team has been exploring timelines for the closure of the game’s online versions and community features. The goal has been to offer extended access to these services, while also providing clear communication about what players can expect. It’s important to note that:

  • The console versions of Disney Infinity will continue to operate as usual with full access to figures and play sets only with the exception of community content features and online multiplayer
  • Until September 30, 2016, Community Content will still be available and players will be able to upload and download any of their favorite Toy Box creations

The email outlines the plans for the three different iterations of Disney Infinity across all platforms, including when certain online functionality will cease for each.

Here’s a full rundown of what’s happening with Disney Infinity, straight from Disney Interactive, over the next eight months.

July 29, 2016

  • No in-game purchases can be made within the PC, Steam version of Disney Infinity 2.0, iOS, Google Android, Amazon Android and Apple TV versions of the game as this feature has now been removed
  • You can continue to make in-game purchases within the Steam version of Disney Infinity 3.0.

Sept. 30, 2016

  • The Steam versions of Disney Infinity 2.0 & 3.0 will remain operational with the exception of all online services and community features as these will be discontinued
  • Apple TV versions of Disney Infinity will be removed from the AppStore
  • The Disney Infinity Community team will no longer be reviewing or approving any new Toy Boxes that are submitted to Disney for all console, mobile and PC versions of the game. However if you are playing on any console, Apple TV or Windows 8/10 versions of the game, you can continue to download your favorite Toy Boxes from the Community Content section until March 3, 2017

Disney Interactive Discontinues Disney Infinity

Disney Interactive has just announced that it’s pulling the plug on the Infinity line and is exiting the self-publishing console games business altogether. Doing so has resulted in a $147 million charge in the Walt Disney Company’s Q2 2016 earnings. Back in March, Disney signaled it would slow development of the “toys-to-life” game which first launched in 2013, but gave no indication it planned to walk away from the series entirely.

Senior VP John Blackburn stated on Disney Interactive’s website:

“Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.”

Disney Infinity has seen major new releases each year, introducing popular characters from Disney / Pixar films, the Marvel universe, and most recently integrating Star Wars characters in Disney Infinity 3.0. Only a month ago, Disney had pledged to make the3.0 title its “biggest game ever” through upcoming downloadable content — a way to make up for the lack of a completely new version 4.0. Well, it seems that’s no longer the plan.

Disney Infinity Comes To Apple TV Along With A “Stars Wars” Themed Play Set

Disney Infinity 3.0

The Apple TV is getting a notable new game today. This morning, Disney announced the launch of its highly anticipated Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition for Apple TV. This “toys-to-life” gaming platform from Disney allows players to use real-world interactive figures to activate original storylines in virtual worlds. This latest edition follows other popular launches like the Marvel Super Heroes release last year and the August release of 3.0 itself.

As an Apple TV starter pack, the new set includes a SteelSeries Nimbus Wireless Controller and a black Bluetooth Disney Infinity Base, as well as the “Star Wars: Twilight of the Republic” Play Set piece, with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano figures.

For those who purchased earlier Disney Infinity editions, the company notes that all the figures and Power Discs from the 1.0 and 2.0 releases will be fully compatible with the new Apple TV version of the game.

In addition, thanks to the Apple TV’s support for third-party controllers, the Nimbus Wireless Controller has been configured to work with the new streaming media player hardware, while still allowing users to play the game as intended, the company says.

According to Sean Patton, Senior Producer for Disney Infinity mobile, the company took care to make sure its controller works well with the Apple TV hardware. “One of the cool things about it is that, like our reader, it’s bluetooth. And the performance on that is really good – it’s very responsive,” he says.

Also of note, the readers for the gaming consoles are wired, which makes them hard to pull out and put away – that’s not great for children, either. The Bluetooth pad is a big improvement, and one that’s available on Apple TV first.

Alongside the launch of the box set itself, players will be able to download the Disney Infinity 3.0 app from the App Store, which allows them to experience the Battle of Yavin from “Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope.” This allows those who are curious about the Disney Infinity universe to play a version of the game without having to invest in the physical hardware, but could help to convert them to that larger platform in the future.

While Disney doesn’t talk about the number of gamers on Disney Infinity’s platform, Patton could point to the sizable amount of content those gamers have created.

“We have hundreds of thousands of levels that have been created [by players] across all three versions of the game,” he says, adding that the range of Infinity titles can span demographic groups, too. In other words, it’s not just for kids. In part, this is thanks to the mainstream appeal of Disney-owned franchises like Marvel and Star Wars.

With Apple TV, Disney Infinity Can Reach A Broader Demographic

Prior to today, Disney Infinity was available on gaming platforms like Sony’s Playstation 3 and 4, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and Nintendo Wii U. It also recently became available on digital platforms, like iOS and Android, as well as on PC and Steam – moves that represent Disney’s interest in making this gaming universe something that appeals to a wider range of gamers.

Related to this, for many new Apple TV owners, the Apple TV App Store will introduce them to big-screened gaming for the first time.

“Apple TV represents an incredible opportunity for us to bring Disney Infinity to a new audience of players who may not have a game console in their household,” said John Blackburn, SVP and GM, Disney Infinity.

Disney Infinity 3.0 on Apple TV could also help boost Disney Interactive’s revenue, which has been in decline. At the close of Q4, Interactive revenues decreased by $15 million to $347 million, while operating income increased $13 million to $31 million. But the latter was due to higher Disney Infinity sales, thanks to the release of Infinity 3.0 on August 30, the company said. And with a new Star Wars-branded set coming out on Apple TV, the potential for another sales boost is there again.

This first Apple TV release, then, is only the start. Patton says the company is already planning more Disney Infinity experiences for the Apple TV App Store, including the release of a “Force Awakens” set in December, and “Marvel Battlegrounds,” which will work with all platforms, including Apple TV.

The new starter pack will be sold for $99 at U.S. Apple Stores nationwide, including retail locations and online, beginning today. It will later become more broadly distributed.

Star Wars Is Coming to Disney Infinity

Disney Infinity 3.0

Toy-game wonks, listen up: Disney’s Infinity video game series will, as rumored, mark its third outing by packing Luke, Han, Leia, Darth Vader and many more into all new Star Wars-themed play sets when version 3.0 arrives for all the current and last-gen consoles, PC and mobile (iOS, Android) platforms this fall. With Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuting this December, I’m sure you’re totally surprised!

Disney, which harbors some of the world’s most iconic entertainment franchises (Star Wars, The Muppets, Marvel, and of course all the core Disney IP), announced Tuesday that Disney Infinity 3.0 will hit this fall. The Star Wars: The Clone Wars-focused starter pack, which includes a “Twilight of the Republic” play set, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, will set you back $64.99. That’s a little lower than its typical asking price, says Disney, and all of the 1.0 and 2.0 figures and power discs will be compatible with 3.0.

Disney says it plans to release three Star Wars play sets, the first (above) set during Episodes I-III, the second during the original trilogy (Episodes IV-VI) and the third, available a bit later this winter, based on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In addition to those, expect new 3.0 play sets that tie into Infinity‘s previous Pixar- and Marvel-angled installments, a few tweaks to Toy Box mode (new gameplay types, including racing, platforming and farming) and new characters, including Ultron (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), Sam Flynn and Quorra (Tron: Legacy), Mulan (Mulan) and Olaf (Frozen).

Back to Star Wars, because that’s why you’re here, Disney says that in addition to the Clone Wars-themed “Twilight of the Republic” play set, another dubbed “Rise of the Empire” will check various original trilogy boxes, letting you play as Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and Vader, pilot X-Wings or the Millennium Falcon in space battles, or poke around planets like Tatooine, Hoth and–wait, sorry, not a planet–Endor.

And that’s just for starters. Disney says to expect more figure and play set announcements in the lead up to the game’s release.

MagicBands Bring More Pixie Dust to Disney Infinity

IASW - Disney Infinity

Disney Interactive’s gaming platform Disney Infinity joined with Disney Parks to offer Walt Disney World Resort guests with a MagicBand a special surprise. In the recently released edition of the game, Disney Infinity (2.0 Edition), only guests with a MagicBand can unlock the enchanting charm of the “it’s a small world” attraction into their very own Toy Box creation.

Guests unlock the download of “it’s a small world” for their Toy Box by placing a MagicBand over the Disney Infinity Base. The Base will detect the presence of a MagicBand, and then will instantly unlock the “it’s a small world” download with no online connectivity required. Additionally, you’ll be able to enchant other players with the iconic music from the “it’s a small world” attraction in the background. Once you’ve created a saved game, you will always have access to the new content.
