  • Mickey’s of Glendale Pin Store – Disney pin enthusiasts will want to stop by the Mickey’s of Glendale Pin Store, which will feature a large assortment of limited-edition pins.

The merch that I’m curious about is what will Dream Store.  Why?  Because I like me some “Expo Exclusive” stuff and over the past five Expos it’s the only store I’m sure that I’ll get into.  I usually get an Expo shirt, but I’ll admit I’m not really excited about a black shirt.  I hope they have other colors.

While the Disney Store appears to have some nice items, I have yet to make it into that store…ever!  So, I’m not getting too excited about anything there.  If I manage to get into that store finally, I’ll worry about it then.

It’s nice to see that Mickey’s of Glendale is separating the store into a pin store and a store for everything else.  I’ve only gotten into that store once, so maybe this is the year I return.

While a lot of the merch looks nice…nothing right now is jumping out at me as a “must have.”  I’m sure I’ll buy something though.

The stores are very popular, so if you’re going to D23 Expo along with the panels, shopping is something you have to plan for and figure out when to try to get into whichever store you want to try to get into.

New Disney Stores Bring Theme Parks to Shoppers

Disney unveiled Tuesday a prototype for its re-imagined retail store — as well as the shopDisney e-commerce site, which was previously DisneyStore.com.

The online store will sell more products featuring popular classic Disney characters and those in the hit movies from Disney-owned Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars.

The revamped stores, versions of which are currently open in Century City and Northridge in California, Nagoya, Japan and Shanghai, will also show a live broadcast of the famous parades that take place at Disney parks and a digital fireworks display each night before they close.

Disney is also partnering with brands like Coach, cookware company Le Creuset, apparel companies rag & bone, Spyder and others to sell more products geared at older parents (like me) — and not just their kids.

Some of the new things you’ll find online beyond toys and stuffed animals? A Darth Vader toaster, a Captain America popcorn maker and Mickey Mouse skinny jeans.

“Disney stores around the world will also be incorporating more product for guests of all ages, beyond their traditionally child-centric assortment,” the company said in its release.

The media giant continues to mint money from its movie division, theme parks and consumer products.

So the revamped stores, which seek to capitalize even more on the success of its Disney princesses, Marvel superheroes and Star Wars characters, makes a lot of strategic sense.

YesterEars Vintage Apparel Collection Coming to Disney Parks Online Store on August 18th

Disney has announced a new vintage apparel collection called “YesterEars” coming to the Disney Parks Online Store on August 18. The name of this collection was inspired by a shop with the same name once found at the former Downtown Disney Pleasure Island. During the next three months, you’ll find limited release apparel inspired by classic Walt Disney World Resort attractions and locations. Here’s a look at what you will find from August 18-25, 2016 at DisneyStore.com/ParkEvents.

YesterEars - Dreamfinder

The first shirt in this collection is something from our childhood. Many of  fell in love with Dreamfinder and Figment when we first visited in the 1980’s or 1990’s. Many of wore a shirt with Dreamfinder and Figment on it during that first trip. Richard Terpstra recreated that exact ringer t-shirt!

Richard also designed this Raglan with artwork inspired by a Walt Disney World Preview Center advertisement. The Center was open from January 10, 1970, until September 30, 1971. At the location, guests could learn about the project firsthand through displays of models and drawings, and a short filmed presentation. There was also a snack bar and merchandise shop. The original Preview Center building can still be found on Hotel Plaza Boulevard near Disney Springs.

Finally, you can “seize the future” with this X-S Tech shirt inspired by ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. This classic Tomorrowland attraction was open from June 20, 1995 to October 11, 2003 in the Magic Kingdom. Housed in the Tomorrowland Interplanetary Convention Center was the laboratory of X-S Tech, a corporation from a distant planet intent on demonstrating its interplanetary teleportation apparatus. But the demonstration was marred by difficulties and an alien creature was accidentally teleported into the laboratory.

Disney to Discontinue Sale of Disney Dollars

Many of us have loved, collected and used Disney Dollars. For those unfamiliar, Disney Dollars are Disney’s paper notes that look like real money and feature characters such as Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Dumbo, and Tinker Bell on the front. They’re only good at Disney Parks and stores, making them essentially like gift certificates. According to multiple reports Disney will stop printing Disney Dollars on May 14th.

It’s truly the end of an era for Disney nerds. Printed as part of a brilliant marketing strategy, the notes were conceived as part gift certificate. The rise of gift cards and the general unpopularity of paper money in the digital age has de-facto made Disney Dollars obsolete. Disney staff were told earlier today, but the company has yet to make an official statement.

Disney Dollars were once so popular that they actually underwent similar anti-counterfeiting measures as regular American currency. Some examples of this include “microprinting, intaglio ink printing, serial numbering, and special material imprinting,” according to DisneyDollars.net, an online resource for the scrip. The bills also have a small amount of glitter on each one and even feature unique serial numbers. The currency is known for using intaglio steel engraving for high-quality printing and the use of 100 percent cotton paper to look and feel like real money.

Disney Dollars will continue to be accepted at Disney locations, since they have no expiration date. But unless you have hundreds of notes to unload you should probably just hold on to them for a bit. The resale market for even once-common Disney products can be pretty lucrative after a few years.

First introduced in 1987, Disney Dollars were a brilliant marketing strategy on Disney’s part. They were kind of like gift certificates posing as souvenirs. Taking home a Disney Dollar note not only gave kids something cool to hold on to, it gave them an incentive to bug their parents about visiting a Disney park again.

Disney Store Installing NFC Readers Ahead of iPhone 6 Launch

Disney Store Logo

Disney is rumored to be in the process of installing NFC-reading payment systems in its Disney Stores ahead of Tuesday’s iPhone 6 launch.

It has been reported that Apple’s iPhone 6 will feature NFC technology when it’s unveiled on September 9th. This technology will permit Apple to enter the mobile payment race.

While it is not known for sure whether this is true for another day or so, an interesting report emerged from 9to5Mac over the weekend.

Apparently, Disney is in the process of fitting out its entire chain of retail stores with NFC payment equipment.

The fact that this comes mere days ahead of the iPhone 6 launch could be a mere coincidence, or that Disney responding to widespread tittle-tattle concerning the next iPhone’s capabilities.

It’s highly likely that Disney knows something that we don’t. The company has close and historic ties with Apple, with CEO Bob Iger sitting on the Apple board.

There are also reports that McDonalds has also begun fitting out some of its restaurants with NFC equipment, and an Apple push into mobile payments looks nailed on – if it didn’t already.

Interestingly, the report also claims that Apple is in the process of upgrading its in-store iBeacon technology, which enables company employees to pinpoint customers within their stores. These new models will be even more accurate, which will apparently be useful in securely accepting mobile payments.
