Monorail Gold Evacuated Following System Power Failure

Monorail Gold

Monorail Gold passengers were evacuated last night following a power failure resulting from severe weather in the area.

The power failure took place around 6 PM on July 13 2014, affecting most of the monorail system. The other monorails operating on the system were able to restart, however, Monorail Gold, which was operating on the Epcot beam, was unable to restart. The monorail happened to come to a halt right on top of the switch track for the Epcot beam, located near to the Wilderness Lodge Resort. The position of the broken-down monorail meant that the usual rescue trains that operate on the monorail beams were unable to reach the stranded Monorail Gold.

With temperatures rising inside the monorail and no quick way of moving the monorail, the decision was made to evacuate the passengers. Although Disney routinely rehearses the evacuation of the monorails, it is rarely done with park guests. The evacuation routes typically involve climbing out of exit hatches onto the roof of the monorail, and then descending down to the beam or into another car, and onto an exit stairway or cherry picker.

Reedy Creek emergency services began the evacuation at around 7pm, and the approximately 120 guests on board were all evacuated by around 8pm.

Walt Disney World Monorail to Operate on Restricted Schedule This Summer

WDW Monorail Red

The Walt Disney World Monorail system is scheduled to run on a new, restricted timetable this summer to accommodate work taking place on the automation upgrades.

Starting June 22 2014, the monorail system will operate on a fixed schedule as follows:

  • Magic Kingdom Resort beam – 8:30am to midnight
  • Magic Kingdom Express beam – 9:30am to 11:30pm
  • Epcot beam – 9am to 11pm

The monorail system now operates on a varying schedule according to park hours. This will change to the fixed schedule listed above.

Additional buses and watercraft will be made available to handle the additional load during the periods when the monorail is not in operation.

When complete, the new automated monorail system will provide a more efficient service with enhanced safety. Expect to see more frequent dispatch of the trains, faster switching times, and monorail arrival information.

There is no timeframe on the completion, but expect to see the new operating schedule be in place throughout the summer of 2014.
