Star Wars.com Announces Video Release Dates for Rogue One

StarWars.com is excited to deliver some special rebel intel: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the thrilling tale of how the Rebellion stole the Death Star plans, is officially coming home. (Just don’t tell Director Krennic.)

The film will arrive in a variety formats, including Digital HD on March 24, and Blu-ray, DVD, and On-Demand on April 4. Take a first look at the box art below.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Hits $1 Billion in Worldwide Box Office

Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” has surpassed the $1 billion milestone at the worldwide box office, becoming the 28th title and 13th Disney film to do so.

“Rogue One” needed 39 days to cross the mark with $512 million domestically and $499 million internationally. It’s the third “Star Wars” movie to gross more than $1 billion, joining “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($2.07 billion) and “Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace” ($1.03 billion).

“Rogue One” is also Disney’s fourth 2016 release to cross the $1 billion mark, joining “Captain America: Civil War,” “Finding Dory,” and “Zootopia.” It’s the top domestic grosser released in 2016 and ranks seventh on the all-time list.

The tentpole took in $7 million at 2,603 North American sites in its sixth frame and another $9 million internationally over weekend. The U.K. is the top market at $79.4 million, followed by China with $61.3 million, Germany with $44.8 million, Japan with $36.8 million, France with $35.8 million, and Australia with $35.6 million.

“Rogue One” is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, and Jiang Wen. The eighth “Star Wars” movie is set immediately before the events of the original “Star Wars” with rebels attempting to steal plans for the Death Star weapon.

Disney also announced that its animated “Moana” has crossed the $500 million mark worldwide, with an estimated $237 million domestically and $272 million  internationally.

‘Rogue One’ Officially Makes Disney Hollywood’s First $7 Billion Studio

An impressive opening weekend for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was more than enough to help Walt Disney capture a new Hollywood record for yearly global box office gross.

The company said on Monday that Walt Disney Studios will set an industry record today by becoming the first Hollywood studio to top $7 billion in global movie ticket sales in a single calendar year. For Disney, which had already bested its own single-year record for box office revenue by November, Rogue One‘s $290.5 million global opening easily pushed the studio’s overall 2016 haul to record heights. The previous yearly box office record belonged to Comcast’s Universal Studios, which pulled in $6.9 billion worldwide just last year.

Disney ruled the movie market in 2016 with a series of blockbusters throughout the year that put the studio within close grasp of a new record heading into a weekend in which the latest Star Wars product from its Lucasfilm division was expected to dominate the global box office. And, Rogue One‘s strong showing is a fitting way for Disney to end its big year, considering that 2016 kicked off with Star Wars: The Force Awakens continuing its own dominant box-office run. (Released on Dec. 18 of last year, The Force Awakens ultimately grossed $2.07 billion worldwide for Disney, with a large chunk of that coming in 2016 and counting toward this year’s tally.)

Following up on The Force Awakens‘ record-setting success, Disney churned out no less than three movies that went on to gross more than $1 billion globally—the animated hit Zootopia, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, and Pixar’s Finding Dory. Meanwhile, Rogue One is forecasted to join that list with what should also end up being a worldwide haul north of $1 billion. Other big movies for Disney this year include The Jungle Book, Marvel’s Doctor Strange, and another animated hit in November’s Moana.

While not all of Disney’s 2016 releases struck box office gold—Alice Through the Looking Glass and The BFG led the list of disappointments—the studio managed to find success across all of its silos. Whether it was live-action and animated movies—or those produced by previously-acquired units Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel Studios—Disney churned out a variety of mega-blockbusters throughout 2016.

“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations,” Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement.

The film studio’s success has come at an opportune time for Disney, which needed a silver lining for a year in which subscriber losses at cash-cow cable network ESPN and declining advertising sales continued to weigh on the company’s revenue. Disney’s big year also comes amid what should be another record year for Hollywood in general. The industry is on pace to break the yearly box office record set in 2015, when Hollywood studios topped $11 billion in domestic ticket sales for the first time ever.

‘Star Wars – A Galaxy Far, Far Away’ to Feature Scenes and Characters From ‘Rogue One – A Star Wars Story’

The “Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away” stage show will receive an update later this month that will include elements from the upcoming movie, “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

Guests will get a first look at AWR Troopers from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Outfitted in their specialized Stormtrooper armor with a dark, ominous gleam, these soldiers serve as bodyguards and enforcers for Director Krennic, a highly placed officer within the Advance Weapons Research (AWR) division of the Empire.

A new Troopers sequence will join the show on December 16th.

Disney’s 2016 Slate: 13 Titles Include ‘Alice’ Sequel, ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff

Disney scooped up giant hunks of the world’s movie audience in 2015, concluding the year with the record-busting “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The studio’s Disney’s complete movie calendar for 2016, released with synopses and artwork Tuesday, is highlighted by “Star Wars” spinoff “Rogue One,” along with potential powerhouses from its Pixar and Marvel subsidiaries.

“Rogue One” is a stand-alone in the Star Wars universe, depicting events prior to “Star Wars: A New Hope.” The Christmas-season film tells the story of resistance fighters out to steal plans to the malevolent Death Star.

The 13-film Disney list includes blockbusters-in-waiting like “Rogue One” and Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” but also lesser known offerings, such as “The Finest Hours” and a remake of a much-loved piece from the studio’s library in “Jungle Book,” the Jon Favreau retelling of the Rudyard Kipling story, employing an amalgamation of live action with animated elements.

Disney finished 2015 with a company record with $5.85 billion in worldwide grosses. Little is left to chance for most of the 2016 followups in the Mouse House, with the majority of its films spun off from previous films or classic stories that will be released on the following dates:

Jan. 29: “The Finest Hours” — Chris Pine stars in the story of a daring Coast Guard rescue mission.

April 15: “Jungle Book,” centered on man-cub Mowgli, returns to the screen April 15, with newcomer Neel Sethi in the title role and an array of name actors as the animated jungle characters, including the panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), the free-spirited Bear Baloo (Bill Murray) and the mother wolf Raksha (Lupita Nyong’o.)

May 16: “Captain America: Civil War” — Chris Evans’ Captain America squares off against Robert Downey Jr.’s Ironman in the May 16 Marvel release, dividing the rest of the hero universe into warring camps.

May 27: “Alice Through the Looking Glass” has Alice back in Underland on a mission to save the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp. Director James Bobin will imagine a new take on Lewis Carroll’s story, as Tim Burton did with 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

June 17: “Finding Dory” is a sequel to 2003’s “Finding Nemo,” which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The blue tang Dory goes looking for answers about her past, with an assist from Nemo and others.

July 1: “The BFG” has director Steven Spielberg reinventing the classic Roald Dahl story of a little girl who befriends a Big Friendly Giant and others in Giant Country. It’s the final DreamWorks film released by Disney before Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners enters a new distribution deal with Universal.

August 12: “Pete’s Dragon” re-imagines an earlier Disney family film of the same name, about a boy named Pete and his best friend, a dragon named Elliott. Among the stars are Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley and Wes Bentley.

Fall: “Queen of Katwe” marks an exception to the Disney formula: It’s an original story. Starring Lupita Nyong’o, the film tells the story of a girl whose world expands from the streets of Uganda to a larger world when she becomes a chess whiz. Along with her voice work in “The Force Awakens” and “Jungle Book” and her live action turn here, Nyong’o is fast becoming a Disney mainstay.

Nov. 4: “Doctor Strange” features Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, as a doctor who discovers magic and alternative realities after suffering a terrible accident. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams also star in the second film of the year from the world of Marvel.

FindiNov. 23: “Moana” represents Pixar’s second release of 2016, an adventure story about a girl who sets out on a mission to prove herself, with the aide of a demi-god, Maui. The title role goes to newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, who emerged from a casting call that spanned the Pacific and involved hundreds of young women. Dwayne Johnson voices Maui.

Dec. 16: “Rogue One” — Director Gareth Edwards leads a cast that includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker.

Unknown: “The Light Between Oceans” from DreamWorks Pictures has been looking for a release window for some time. It still doesn’t have one for the film, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander that the studio says is about “fate, love, moral dilemmas and the lengths to which one couple will go to see their dreams realized.”

‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ Gets Release Date; Spinoff Movie Called ‘Rogue One’

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced details of the upcoming “Stars Wars” films at its annual shareholders meeting in San Francisco.

Rian Johnson has also been confirmed to write and direct “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which will hit theaters May 26, 2017.

Gareth Edwards’ upcoming standalone film, starring Felicity Jones, will be called “Rogue One.” The movie starts filming in London this summer and opens Dec. 16, 2016.

“Rogue One,” based on an idea by Oscar-winning vfx supervisor John Knoll, was written by “Cinderella” scribe Chris Weitz.

Kathleen Kennedy will produce the standalone film alongside Knoll, Tony To and John Schwartz.

Plot details of “Rogue One” are unknown.

Edwards’ spinoff movie is one of two known “Star Wars” spinoffs in the works at Lucasfilm and Disney. Director Josh Trank (“Chronicle”) is developing another top secret feature.

It’s unclear how both spinoff features will play into the upcoming seventh chapter “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” if at all. Speculation has Edwards’ and Trank’s movies focusing on the early days of original characters Princess Leia and Han Solo.

The J.J. Abrams-directed “Force Awakens,” which opens Dec. 18, features original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher as well as newcomers like John Boyega and Adam Driver. It will take place 30 years after 1983’s “Return of the Jedi.”

Disney is banking heavily on the “Star Wars” franchise after acquiring Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion. The studio is also planning “Star Wars”-themed attractions at Disney parks across the globe.
